chapter 8

Jesus’ Healing Touch

10 After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.
~1 Peter 5:10

I have come to learn that tears are healing. They mean that God is working on something in you or someone you are praying for. It is humbling to allow tears to fall and a display of submission when you allow God to humble you to the point you allow your tears to fall in front of people (Bible study, church, prayer).

As I was preparing to attend my first UPCI East Coast Women’s Conference, I felt overwhelmed. To put it mildly, I was a nervous wreck. I was not accustomed to being around a lot of people and if you are familiar with Spirit-filled Christians, we can be a lively bunch. I was concerned about the sensory overload I was almost certain to experience.

Most of all, though, I was concerned about how the change in routine would affect me. Change tends to upset me and exacerbate my negative reactions to sensory input. I would likely be singing songs I had never heard, much less knew. I would be attending services that would be different from the services I was accustomed to attending. I would be around a bunch of people I did not know and who did not know me.

I didn’t know if they would accept me or view me as some sort of weirdo. The enemy was really playing with me head, telling me that I was different, that I did not fit in with “those women.” He set me up to be rejected. In fact, in my mind I was rejected before I even got there.

As much as I want people to like me and accept me, though, the biggest issue for me was the change in routine. When things are “out of order” I get very disoriented, even dizzy. When things are out of order and it is very active with lots of noise, it leads straight to a meltdown.

The worse part, though, is that I get deep pains throughout my body, like electrical shocks. There is an “undercurrent” that pulses through my entire body, and pain “surfaces” in various areas, the location changing rather rapidly. It may go from leg to hand to neck to foot in a matter of seconds. It is as if my brain is trying to find or create the neural pathways that can manage that sensory overload.

It can be very uncomfortable, painful. I have been this way my entire life. Because of it, I have often avoided large crowds, events, even certain church functions.

As I prayed the morning I was to leave, though, Jesus spoke to me and if I hadn’t been cultivating a relationship with Him over time and stopped to listen I probably would have missed it. Daily prayer is so important!

He said, “I am healing you.” He didn’t say, “I will heal you” or “I am going to heal you,” He said, “I am healing you.” It was right then, right there, I was being healed as I sat on that bus praying.

I understood, in a flash, that the pain and disorientation are not the result of my being “broken” or defective. They come from healing. I was being healed.

I understood that my scars are not from my sin or my defects, but from my healing.

Jesus gave me permission to be distressed and to react to the discomfort and pain. But by powering through it (even if I cry or react in ways that exhibit my discomfort) I am allowing His healing to take place. And the next time it won’t be so bad. It will get better and better and easier and easier. I have to get there because He has shown me that one day I will be speaking before groups. I can speak in front of a group, but the socializing part terrifies me. This was His way of letting me know that He is in control and He won’t turn me loose on a crowd until I am ready.

If I had not had a prayer life I would not have understood that. If I hadn’t been filled with the Holy Spirit I would not have understood that. All of these things are like pieces of an intricate puzzle. They support each other and each has a place to fit. It takes work, though.

I got to the conference and it was just as loud and active as I thought it would be. And I did feel the pains, the shocks, but I knew what they were. By the end of the morning service on the second day, they were significantly less noticeable. I did not have the first problem with sensory overload.

I was in a room of 800 weeping, crying, wailing, travailing, dancing, praising yelling women and I did not experience the first instance of sensory overload. In fact, I was more focused on God, more in touch with him – and infinitely more grateful to his loving, healing touch.

At one point, in one of the services the Holy Spirit had broken out amongst the women and they were dancing, weeping, singing, yelling – it was very loud and very active. But I sat right there in the midst of it all, calm. I felt a hand on my right shoulder. My pastor’s wife and a friend were sitting behind me and I thought, “Oh, how nice! They are praying for me!”

But when I looked back, no one was there.

I still felt the hand and felt an arm across my shoulders.

Then I became aware of a peaceful, calming presence beside me, on my left – with His arm around me. I just leaned into that presence and, for the first time in my life, took in all the noise and lights and activity without any anxiety. Never had I been able to be in an environment like this without medication.

By the time we left to go home, I realized that I was looking people in the eye – something that had always been extremely difficult for me to do.

I never asked for this healing, but Jesus gave it to me anyway. I certainly did not deserve such a wondrous gift, but He gave it to me anyway.

Lord, Change Me

My husband and I pray each morning. We pray for our union, our church, our families. We pray for forgiveness. We praise God and He honors us with His presence.

And every morning I ask God to change me.

All that other stuff is great, necessary, but in our walk with Christ, one vital element should be growing in Him and becoming like Him. We should, on a regular basis, seek to be like Him.

Every morning I ask, “Lord, order my steps. Let my words be Your words, my actions be Your actions, my thoughts be Your thoughts. Kill off the things in me that are not pleasing to You and fill me with You. Make me like you.”

If we are not seeking to be like Jesus, we don’t stand a chance.

I know I have shared this before, but it is important enough that it needs to be addressed again – and again and again.

DAILY, we should be earnestly seeking to be like Jesus. We should be trying our hardest to be like Him. Our pleas, our prayers asking Him to make us like Him should not be just lip service. We must ask then live our lives as best we can to reflect that request. It isn’t enough to just ask, we must DO as well.

This isn’t always easy. It means killing the flesh, the pride, the rebellion, the deception, the lying to the world and ourselves about how “Christian” we are. There is more, but those things are more obvious. These are the little things that will trip you up and keep you from truly living for God.

You have to let Him in. This is not an optional thing, it MUST happen. You MUST be filled with the Holy Spirit, which means allowing God to be in you, live in you, direct your life. And when that happens, everything changes. YOU will be different. You will feel different and act different.

Today, right where you are, just pray, ask God to order YOUR steps, to be your words, your actions, your thoughts. Ask Him to fill you with Him, to fill you with the Holy Spirit (evidenced by speaking on other tongues).

Just ask, “God, change me.”

And He will.

Is the Bible the Word of God?

While some may think that this question is not necessary, a recent Gallup poll, unfortunately, says otherwise. According to this poll, 49% of Americans say that the Bible is the inspiredWord of God but it should not be interpreted literally. Others state it is basically a book of legends and stories, no more real than Aesop’s Fables. (You can see the poll HERE)

So, why do so few people believe the Bible is God’s Word? The way I see it, there are several factors that may contribute:

  • ·         Media teaching otherwise
  • ·         God’s removal from school and public areas (10 commandments in courthouse, no prayer in public/political gatherings, etc.)
  • ·         Churches relaxing their doctrine “to attract more people into their congregation” (in other words, they deny the Truth in order to serve and satisfy the world)
  • ·         It is easier

I want to expound upon the final point (the others are self explanatory).

It is easier to “cherry pick” scriptures, finding those you can live with and discarding those that restrict you too much. It is easier to relax your own beliefs and talk yourself into accepting that the Bible is not God’s actual Word, but rather writings inspired by God (big difference), than it is to follow that narrow path.

The alternative to denying the Word is, of course, knowing that the Bible is God’s Word and that carries a lot of responsibility. It means that you are held to a certain standard.

Accepting the Bible as God’s Word and interpreting it literally draws you closer to God. You become one of His. To accept the Truth and follow the Word of God means a shedding of this world. It means a dying of the flesh.

By nature, we humans are sinful. We can try to do our best to live the way Jesus taught, but it isn’t always easy and we will fail. That is why we cleanse ourselves in the blood – daily. That is why we repent and ask for forgiveness daily, because our human nature defies us. Whether it is thoughts, words spoken, acts or anything else, we still sin and do things that are not pleasing to God.

The Apostle Paul said, “I die daily.” If it wasn’t easy for him, it certainly isn’t easy for us!

So, with that in mind, it is easier for folks to simply surrender to the flesh, to live in the world because it is easier than walking with God.

But is it really?

Living by God’s Word (the Bible) gives us the tools to kill the flesh and overcome the world. We find joy that can’t be found anywhere else. I have a peace that cannot be replicated by anyone or anything else.

Living in the Word, truly living in the Word, helps us deflect bitterness, anger, frustration, depression, hatred and other non-productive emotions that eat away at us. While we may be faced with these emotions, we can use God’s Word to combat them and we can be released.

In John 14:23-24, Jesus said, “If anyone loves me he will cherish my word; my Father will love him and we will come to him and make him our abode. He that does not love me neglects my words. Yet the word you hear is not my own but that of the Father who sent me.”

Now, why would Jesus say that the Bible was the Word of God if it wasn’t so? How can Christians ignore this?

Yes, it was written by different people throughout history; people who were working under God. God was working through them. There is history there in the accounts by different people, but the instruction from God is recorded in the Bible and is His infallible Word.

Let’s look at 2 Timothy 3:15-17 (KJV)
15And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

I researched the etymology of “inspiration” in this scripture. The translation here is somewhat misleading for this era because the true meaning has been lost.

I won’t get into it too much. If you are interested, email me and I will send you more info. However, I will tell you that the literal translation of the words from the Greek term is closer in meaning to “spiration,” not really “inspiration.” Spiration means to breathe out, meaning that the literal translation means the Word is God-breathed.

Another way to understand it is that “inspire” comes from the basic Latin verb “inspirare” which means (literally) “to breathe into, upon or in.” So when the verse above says that all scripture is given by the inspiration of God, it means that it is the creative breath of God that brought the Word, the Bible, into existence.

The Bible IS the Word of God.

The Wal-Mart Church

Welcome to the Wal-Mart church, home of the low price guarantee! We guarantee that your salvation will available for the lowest price possible. Confession, repentance, a quick dunk in the Baptismal (in whose name, does it really matter?) and you are good to go! No pesky doctrine to get in the way of your fun, no high prices – ever. Check out today’s special: A shot of joy (guaranteed to last at least through the end of the service, possibly through the day) with a side of praise and worship for the low, low price of one repentance. What a deal! And don’t worry, you won’t leave burdened with other’s problems and an obligation to pray every day – we want to offer you the absolute lowest price and we do!

Sounds pretty good, huh?

The only problem is, you get what you pay for.

Discount salvation is no salvation. Do you go to a Wal-Mart church?

Don’t get me wrong, Wal-Mart has some great deals at great prices. A Wal-Mart church does, no doubt, offer great deals at great prices as well. Maybe you get to enjoy some praise and worship, get a feel good message and awesome fellowship with your brothers and sisters.

But then what?

What about your salvation?

News flash, there is a three prong approach to salvation – the ONLY way to get to Heaven.

Wal-Mart churches tend to leave off the uncomfortable parts, the parts that carry a higher price tag. Then again, they could not appeal to the masses if they raised their prices, could they?

Well, your “deal” is not really a deal at all. Like many discount items, cheap means cheaply made as well as low cost. Discount salvation will only take you so far, but not all the way. Discount salvation won’t get you into Heaven.

This is your salvation, your eternal life. Do you want almost right or exactly right? Do you want to be politically correct so no one feels left out or offended (the way of the lost), or do you want to be completely correct, receiving and giving the truth (the way of those who will reside eternally with Christ)?

Time is running out. You won’t always have these choices. You won’t always have these opportunities.

Free will seems great, but it is really a bad idea. Free will is how we wind up with Wal-Mart churches (and a lot of other stuff that takes us off the path). I can see why God gave us free will and the value of it, but still, sometimes I just want to shake some people!

How do you spot the real deal from the cheap knock offs, you ask?

Some ways to spot the real deal:

  • ·         Doctrine is taught
  • ·         Acts 2:38 is preached and practiced
  • ·         The concept of ONE God (God’s name is Jesus, God is the Holy Spirit) is taught
  • ·         Evangelism is a cornerstone (to populate the Kingdom-it’s about saving souls)
  • ·         There is a call for you to die to this world and let Christ fill you
  • ·         Sacrifice is taught – sacrifice self, worldly things, etc.

False prophets are beautiful. They make you feel good, tell you things to make you feel good and OK, don’t bother you with the sacrifices and requirements for salvation – anything goes, whatever you are comfortable with is fine. They twist the scripture to make salvation comfortable – so you don’t have to give too much or seek too much (like speaking in tongues) or pay too high a price. But they won’t get you into Heaven.

False prophets are the cornerstone of Wal-Mart churches.

Don’t be fooled.

Harold Camping, you have been deceived

So, May 21, 2011, 6 pm, came and went – completely uneventful.

Now, many people who believed one man’s “prophesy” are broke, not just financially, but many in spirit and faith as well. The tragedy, I am certain, will unfold over the next few days or weeks as we hear more stories of people giving their entire life savings to support Mr. Camping’s cause.

Mr. Camping, you have been deceived.

The sad thing is you carried many, many people along with you and dragged them down into your deception as well.

“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.” ~Matthew 7:15

I am sure you had good intentions (at least I hope so) and, yes, I agree that we should be out there saving souls. I must say you did have a powerful, far reaching campaign and if only you had been giving the right message, maybe this would not have been for naught.

If only…

See, I am a Christian. I know that one day Jesus will come. We will not know the day or the hour (Matthew 24:36), but I will be ready.

Will you?

I admit, I am only vaguely familiar with your other “prophesies” of rapture and the end of the world. Sadly, my youth was rather misspent and while God was an acquaintance, He was not the integral part of my life that He is today.

Today, He is the number one thing, person in my life. All I do is for Him – which is why I am writing this to you today.

But as these past days unfolded and I read more about you, your ministry and your predictions (for they are not prophesy, they are not even Biblical), I wept for the lives you were touching in all the wrong ways and all of the good that you could have done had you only opened your Bible and read it as it is instead of twisting its words for your own personal use. The Bible is the truth and you can’t change the truth. But you can twist it and mislead people, which is exactly what you did.

Mr. Harold Camping, I respect your obviously brilliant mind, your mathematics, but what you failed to understand is that our God is greater than your mathematics. God is greater than your brilliant mind. God is greater than your words and far, far greater than the spirit that deceived you.

See, you gave just enough truth to sound credible – on the surface. Yes, you are right – in part – there are many churches that are not biblical and I would even venture to say that the Spirit of God is not operating them – which would leave Satan at the helm, more of a spirit of antichrist. That is the thing about the spirit of antichrist, it gives just enough truth to sound credible, but it twists that truth, corrupting it and misleading the people. They get so close, so very close to salvation, to the truth, to God’s truth, then they are led off of the path and never make it back.

And you, Mr. Harold Camping, aided that spirit of antichrist in misleading how many people? Yes, you were deceived, but this highlights just how vital it is that we study the Bible.

That, my friend is the cure.

Jesus said that the sheep know the shepherd’s voice and so we should be like them and know Jesus’ voice (John 10:24-27). Yes, so many don’t know His voice and are led astray, but you, YOU, were doing the leading.

If you don’t know, truly know Jesus, then read the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). Then read Acts. Read what Jesus said, how He lived, what He taught. Then, Mr. Camping, pray. Pray aloud, into the atmosphere, for the power of life and death is in the tongue (Proverbs 18:21). Repent (not just for leading so many astray, but you should repent and ask for forgiveness every time you pray – but first you must forgive), ask for clarity, for wisdom, for discernment, to know His voice.

I will continue to pray for you and for those who believed in you. I have prayed throughout this ordeal. I have wept many tears as I brought this situation to God each morning. I prayed for peace of mind for the anxious, for clarity and wisdom, that somehow someone would reveal the truth to you and your followers.

Mr. Harold Camping, you still have a lot to learn. I have no doubt that in your heart you feel all of this was right and justified. You are so close, yet you don’t quite make the mark.

I hope that this will open discussions in churches all over the world and that pastors will teach the real Jesus, the One True God, teach how to know His voice.

We can learn a lot from you, Mr. Camping. I just regret the expense. While people lost their life savings, their possessions, many more lost things much more valuable such as faith and salvation.

And that, Mr. Camping, is the greatest crime all, misrepresenting salvation and leading people away from the kingdom instead of to it. Know His voice, sir, and then teach your people the TRUTH because if you don’t, the consequences are horrible.

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are.” ~Matthew 23:15

If you truly want to lead people to God, use God’s Word, not your own.

God’s Will not Mine

The late Howard Cosell is credited with saying, “What’s right isn’t always popular. What’s popular isn’t always right.” This is what God chose to lay on my heart this morning. I let it stay there in my head for a while, until I realized that this was just a glimpse of what he was actually giving me, sort of like lifting just the corner of a veil covering a massive painting.

What is God’s will isn’t always pleasing to us. What is pleasing to us isn’t always God’s will.

There was no toying with words to get the style and rhythm and meaning just right, God just handed it to me and I knew what I would be writing about today.

James 4:3-4

3You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.

4You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

Sometimes we are asking for the wrong things and looking through the wrong eyes. Our motives and priorities are all messed up. God does not want us to be of this world, but set apart from it.

Sometimes, it may not be popular, it may not be pleasing to us, but it is God’s will and it is RIGHT.

When we are in tune with God through knowledge of His word and are operating in the spirit, we not only hear His voice, we know it.

Then it is up to us to decide how we will exercise our free will. There is always a choice; even it is the choice to do nothing.

But is we are obedient and stop listening to those voices of the flesh and tune in to God, we will never, ever be guided in the wrong direction. It is the ultimate submission, the complete giving up of self, but to follow in His will is so worth it.

Many blessings come with obedience and submission to God. He honors these qualities in us where many humans will only take advantage and manipulate us through them. He is the ONLY ONE who has our best interests at heart.

24Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. ~ Matthew 16:24

We can’t just pick and choose which parts of ourselves we want God to change, the parts we want to surrender to Him. We must surrender all to Him.

Have you surrendered all to Him? Or are there still some vestiges of this world that you are still clinging to?

Is it God’s Voice or Mine?

Christian Aspie, Christian Living, Know His Voice, living for God, relationship with Jesus

God talks to me, guides me and helps me on a daily basis. There isn’t a doubt in my mind that it is His voice I hear when He speaks – most of the time anyway. Sometimes, for a split second, I question if what I am hearing is God or my own thoughts (I am pretty good at recognizing the spiritual influences that are NOT of God).

How do you tell?

I have run across this question quite a bit. It seems that many people out there want to know how to discern God’s voice from their own thoughts.

Well, the way I see it, there are actually two steps that must happen when God speaks to us – recognizing God’s voice and obeying Him. I’ll concentrate on the first part and we’ll get into the obedience later.

We must recognize that it is God speaking if we are going to obey him.

The only way to do that, to know His voice, is to develop a relationship with Him. You know your best friend’s voice, your siblings or parent’s voice. When they call on the phone, you recognize their voice immediatly, don’t you? In fact, you could probably even read something that they wrote and instantly know they wrote it without even seeing the name of the author.

You know the person well enough that you just know, right?

The Gospel of John gives us a clear and easy to understand explanation of this, of how we will be able to discern God’s voice from our own thoughts.

John 10:2-5 (King James Version)

2But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

3To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.

4And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.

5And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.

See, Jesus is the shepherd and we are the sheep. We know His voice so when He calls, we follow Him for we know His voice.

Again, though, this familiarity, this knowing, can only come through having arelationship with Christ. We have to get to know Him so that we can know His voice.

I will write more on that in coming days – how to have a relationship with Jesus. But this is the beginning, where it starts – recognizing that it is necessary and birthing a desire to know Him.

Do you recognize God’s voice when He speaks to you? How?

Hope for the Hopeless

I have a situation occurring in my life right now that is difficult. It involves people who are treating me unfairly, even with cruelty at times.

It hurts because I have tried to be good and do what these people want. I just cannot please them. They don’t wantto like me.

And they proclaim themselves to be Christians.

It is confusing.

But as I prayed for them, for the situation, this morning, and as I have let God speak to me about the situation, I realize that the flesh is weak. Even “Christians” can be influenced demonically and turn against their own brothers and sisters in Christ.

Wow. I did not just write that. This is God speaking. I don’t have that insight into the human psyche. I am not that smart. And I don’t talk like that. But as I have said before, God does the writing, I just hold the pen.

What I have come to realize – and not on my own, but through God’s gentle guidance – is that while these people, these bullies, may have an affect on my state here on Earth, in this temporary life, they cannot even begin to touch my state in eternity or my position with God.

God will put me where He wants me and He will direct me down the path that He wants me to pursue. He will never let me down and He will take care of me. I will have what I need – always, I know this.

I am here for a reason. I am in the paths of these people for a reason. Maybe I need to learn lessons, maybe they do, maybe someone witnessing the way these people treat me is looking to see how I will react.

I want to show them the face of God, let them see the grace and mercy that Jesus has put in my heart. I want them to see what faith can do.

And maybe someone will be led to God through this – or back to Him.

No soda (at all) and no FaceBook games! I have also resolved to get myself back in shape and lose some of this weight. My father had high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. These conditions are hereditary. By not taking care of myself I am putting myself at risk for having the same conditions.

I don’t think this honors God at all. When I don’t take good care of the body He gave me, that is rude. It is like He gave me a wonderful gift and I trashed it.
So, I am getting back on track.
I am really tired this evening so I let’s see, what did God want me to know today?
Scripture:  The Lord will work out his plans for my life – for your faithful love, O Lord, endures forever. Don’t abandon me, for you made me.

~ Psalm 138:8

This was in my email today (my “Encouraging Word” from KLOVE.com). WOW, I don’t think I need to say more.

Observation: God has already written several pieces through me and this morning I received the beginning of an outline for another piece. I can’t wait to see what He does with me now!

Application: I have to be still, listen and obey. When He talks I must be not only able to listen, but ready to act. I have a hard time transitioning from one activity to another, particularly if it is unscheduled. I am trying to learn how to overcome this but it might be the most difficult part of this journey thus far.

Prayer: I will ask God to help quell the anxiety I experience from transitioning from thing to thing and if He wants me to do something, even if it goes against my schedule, my structure, I need to learn to be obedient and TRUST in HIM so that I won’t be anxious when I have to change my routine to do His will.
